I am the reader of the audiobook of The Big Midweek, Steve Hanley from The Fall’s book about playing bass for two decades in the greatest British band, against twenty years of social change. You can hear it here….
I am now writing 1000 funny words a week for Carol Cadwalladr’s new on-line newspaper The Nerve, run by people who were sacked or quit when Tories took over The Observer. It is immediately ace.
Sign up here and it would also really be great if you could pay them £6.95 a month as the 5 women at the helm sunk all their redundancy money into it. Carol understands that the only story in town is how the tech-bros choose what news we see and how we understand the world, and The Nerve will address this head on. The only news that matters.
Please send the link below and this begging request to anyone you can.

STEWART LEE VS THE MAN-WULF. The unstoppable Man-Wulf show has another London run, having already done 12000 seats at Royal Festival Hall and 12000 seats at Leicester Sq Theatre.
It’s sure to look great in the gothic confines of the Alexandra Palace theatre.
My favourite show to perform and as the world gets worse the basic premise of the show – that the bully boys are taking over in music, comedy and TV cooking shows – only gets funnier. ALEXANDRA PALACE, 3rd – 15th Feb 2026, Tuesday to Saturday at 7.30pm plus Sunday matinees at 3.30pm
Tickets on sale 30th July.
BOOK HERE: https://www.alexandrapalace.com/whats-on/stewart-lee-vs-the-man-wulf/
Along with WAXFACE’s usual line of Stewart Lee merch there are new for 2025 t-shirts and hoodies on the Man-Wulf theme, all of the highest quality. I’d wear them myself but I’d look arrogant. Waste the money your Nan gave you for Xmas here

STEWART LEE vs THE MAN-WULF BRAND NEW SHOW
UK TOURING THROUGHOUT 2026
NB: TICKETS FOR THESE SHOWS WILL REMAIN AT THE ADVERTISED PRICE. SURGE PRICING IS IMMORAL AND TICKETMASTER AND OASIS ARE WANKERS, ENCOURAGED BY SUCCESSIVE TORY CULTURE SECRETARIES IN THEIR CRIMINAL ENDEAVOURS.

In this brand-new show, Lee shares his stage with a tough-talking werewolf comedian who hates humanity. The Man-Wulf lays down a ferocious comedy challenge to the culturally irrelevant and physically enfeebled Lee. Can the beast inside us all be silenced with the silver bullet of Lee’s unprecedentedly critically acclaimed style of stand-up.
The show will tour the UK throughout 2026.

Stewart’s 2019-2022 touring show Snowflake/Tornado, which was originally broadcast as a BBC Special in Autumn 2022 is now available to buy or rent “on demand” from www.mediagarageproductions.com
Both shows also appear to be free as part of the current Amazon Prime rosta, but buy them from us to defeat American fascism.
We are currently preparing a physical release of these shows but it’s got delayed as I got pneumonia and have been bogged down in picking through a wealth of possible, and very exciting, audio extras, where the material worked much better than in the broadcast show itself.
I am on in this with Bridget Christie, Athena Kugblenu, Miles Jupp and more. Robert Smith from The Cure is in charge this year. http://lnk.to/TCT26
The actor Kevin Eldon has a new podcast called Speakers.
I listened to it.
It is funny and also uses the fact that it is made of sound!!! Find it wherever you find your podcasts. Kevin Eldon is 98 years old.
I am appearing on BBC podcast with Armando Ianucci. It is ace.
I am special stand-up guest of Scottish punk pioneers SKIDS at their weekender at Portmerion Prisoner village in N Wales. Come and see me get booed off by old punks. https://skidsofficial.com/news-1/f/the-absolute-weekend-2026-1 What an amazing life I am having in my late 50s

I will be doing short stand-up sets at the following festivals
BEARDED THEORY 20TH – 24TH MAY, CATTON PARK DERBYSHIRE https://beardedtheory.co.uk w Pixies, Damned, Maytals, Au Pairs, Nightingales & Ted Chippington. This is a great, friendly festival that totally feels like it is run for the benefit of the people, and it has a brilliant tent called Convoy Cabaret which is all proper hardcore anarcho-punk and traveller music.
DEER SHED 24TH – 26TH JULY, BLADERSBY PARK, N YORKS https://deershedfestival.com Sleaford Mods, Angeline Morrison, New Eves & The Adam Buxton Band. The village fete vibe of indie rock!

The mighty Michael Legge used to have a crie de couer every now and again during the Edinburgh fringe – “Let’s sell this gig out!”
Weds Jan 28th is the 25th anniversary of my local free jazz pub gig, Flim Flam, which means I’ve been going to see their shows for over half my adult life. I’ll be guest-hosting the show.
The night is run by Alan Wilkinson, whom heads will know as one the top three living saxophonists working in the European Free Improvisation milieu, and whom rock fans will know as that guy who sometimes opens for Spiritualized, and whom comedy fans will know as the saxophonist in the live film of Basic Lee.
Maybe you saw his devastating performance with Steve Noble and John Edwards at my 2016 All Tomorrow’s Parties festival? Alan has pushed the boat out for his quarter century and as usual the bill includes a mix of new talent, low key legends, and people you’d pay much more to see in your local state-sanctioned temple of culture; namely Free Vocalese godmother and queen of all she surveys Maggie Nicols, Birmingham beatmaster Mark Sanders, Welsh drone-witch Angharad Davies, the imperial viceroy of the kit Steve Noble, Alan himself and more, with live jazz art from Gina Southgate. No advance tickets are available so bring £10 cash to the door and the music starts at 8.30. And it’s where I recorded Comedy Vehicle. Let’s sell this gig out!!!!
I love Waen Shepherd’s Gary Le Strange character, and finally he has a new album.
GARY LE STRANGE: CHROMIUM DOCKYARD
HIS CLASSIC LOST ALBUM AVAILABLE NOW, EXCLUSIVELY ON BANDCAMP
https://garylestrange.bandcamp.com/album/chromium-dockyard
Waen Shepherd says: “ Dear Le Strangers. It is my proud privilege to announce the release of Chromium Dockyard, the fourth full-length album by eccentric electro-rocker Gary Le Strange, a full 13 (or 19, or maybe even 22) years in the making [it’s complicated]. Work started on this troubled collection in 2012, before real life got in the way and Gary was forced to abandon it in 2016. Along the way, Gary released the singles Shut Up Mum and Norman (I’ve Dropped My Cup of Tea), both of which remained orphans for over a decade. But now, spurred on by the power of chronic unemployment and having way too much time on his hands, Gary has finally managed to finish his classic lost album, and both singles can take their rightful places in this insanely thrilling selection. A stunning set of eleven pop songs and one experimental documentary, planting itself firmly between the New Romanticism of his early days and the wild experimentation of his psychedelic period, Chromium Dockyard is an eclectic journey through the fractured psyche of an aging British pop star as he grapples with the multiple perils of persecution, hair loss and the end of the world, via the ancient disciplines of synth rock, new wave pop, doomy Gothic ballads and apocalyptic electronica.
The perfect festive gift for that friend of yours who’s really into Gary Numan, that friend of yours who’s a Goth, or that friend of yours who continually complains about how there are never any good comedy songs these days (or that enemy of yours who hates all these things), Chromium Dockyard is simultaneously more ambitious and more accessible than anything Gary has attempted before, and serves as the perfect entry point to the world of Gary Le Strange.
Yours robotically
Waen Shepherd (Gary’s ‘manager’)
TRIGGER WARNING. This album features both direct and indirect references to bullying, suicide, drug use, depression, alcoholism, public intoxication, sexual deviancy, pornography, unwanted touching, prosopagnosia, ADHD, loss of identity, hair loss, tea loss, face loss and extreme unnecessary violence. It also features the words f**k, s**t, c**t, c**k, c**p, p**s, b**bs, a**e, w***y, s**g, p**ck, b*gger, b****cks, k******d, g*****d, f******d, l****r, b****y and m****t, and on at least one occasion tells you point blank that you are going to die. Listen at your own risk.
If you’ve enjoyed this email, you can read more about the album at garylestrange.co.uk
ABOUT WAEN SHEPHERD Gary Le Strange is the musical alter ego of actor, writer, comedian and composer Waen Shepherd, who won the Perrier Award for Best Newcomer in 2003 (for his show Polaroid Suitcase) and the Chortle Best Newcomer Award in 2004, then did two more Edinburgh shows (2004’s Face Academy and Beef Scarecrow in 2006) before violently somersaulting into obscurity. Each of Gary’s shows was accompanied by a full-length comedy album, all of which are now available to stream or buy on Bandcamp. As a comic actor, Waen might be vaguely recognisable from fleeting bit parts in various comedy shows from about a decade ago, like Hyperdrive (BBC2), Count Arthur Strong (BBC2), We Are Klang (BBC3), The Inbetweeners (C4, as John ‘Paedo’ Kennedy) and Steve Oram’s cult film AAAAAAAAH! You might also have heard his voice in a handful of BBC radio comedies, such as Out to Lunch (BBC Radio 2), The Day the Music Died (BBC Radio 2), The Lucy Montgomery Variety Pack (BBC Radio 4) and 2525 (BBC Radio 4). As a composer, Waen has provided theme tunes, scores and random bits of music for a number of television shows, including Crackanory (Dave), Action Team (ITV2), Mandy (BBC2), Intruder (C5), No Strings Attached (E4) and the BAFTA-winning Murder in Successville (BBC1), plus the highly-acclaimed score for Gareth Tunley’s BAFTA-nominated film The Ghoul. As a writer… well, he wrote this, didn’t he? Chromium Dockyard is Gary Le Strange’s first full-length album since Beef Scarecrow in 2006 and (not counting the previously unreleased tracks in his Complete Bandcamp Discography from 2024), his first new material since the single I Am a Video in 2015. It is Waen’s first album since his original soundtrack for The Ghoul, released in 2020.

EMMA TRICCA I’ve seen Emma Tricca loads in 2025 without even planning to. She became ubiquitous. MY CULTURAL YEAR 2025 (DEC 30TH 2024 – DEC 2025)
This year I didn’t read enough and watched hardly any TV. I moved my turntable into the kitchen where I write, accepted that I need my hearing aids even just for listening to music at home, and went into a very rewarding 12 months of three-dimensional sound, rediscovering old faves and finding depths in music I didn’t know I liked. I watched a lot of films, walked a lot of site-strewn moors, saw a lot of art and went to as many live music gigs as I used to when I was young.
It has been a great year for brain-feeding and soul-nourishment.
* means something struck me as bad, but this year I deliberately disconnected Netflix as I was hate-watching a lot of bad stand-up and dumb documentaries and algorhythmicaly awful dramas, which was bad for my brain.
***** means something struck me, in that moment, as extra special.
I’m not offering up an objective judgement. It was just that experience, at that time, in that state of mind. Discharge, for example, arrived at the100 Club in January after the usual New Year depression in the midst of a bout of pneumonia and put a rocket up the ass of my 2025; Loudon Wainwright III, in a little cinema in Paris days before Christmas, calmly and quietly and with great warmth and humour, anatomised and exploded many things that had been troubling me and puzzling me that I hadn’t been able to put names to, for which I will be forever grateful.
“I haven’t seen any of Stewart Lee’s nasty little lists… but this is dark stuff… a form of bullying, intimidation and shaming that Joseph McCarthy or The Stasi would recognise.” John Robinson, golf comedian, Radio X
