Chris Evans, comedy content magnate of the Go Faster Stripe label, writes:
“Let me tell you a little about the thing – it’s is a re-release of a record that we put out back in 2007.
Stew and I had just started working together – his 90s Comedian show was the first DVD release by my new company Go Faster Stripe. Flush from the success of that we planned a CD of the audio performance of “Pea Green Boat” – Stew’s deconstruction of the Edward Lear poem The Owl and the Pussycat.
I was looking thorough the website to see how much it would cost to make the CD when I noticed that you could still get vinyl. This predated the vinyl revival by several years, so it was quite expensive to do and we had some difficultly selling the 500 copies which we had produced. Essentially a vanity project for me and Stew, we needed to sell every copy to break even. We eventually managed this, and put the matter behind us.
Then, at a sparsely attended DVD signing that I had organised for Stew at the Machynlleth comedy festival this year, we got chatting and decided that the time had come for a deluxe vinyl reissue of the 10″. It’s more or less identical to the 2007 release, except this time we have pressed the record on pea green vinyl, included a mp3 download code and removed the references to myspace on the back of the sleeve.
Here’s the original sleeve notes –
Pea Green Boat was developed under scratch workshop conditions by Stewart Lee at Battersea Arts Centre in December 2001. It was inspired by finding a tea towel featuring Edward Lear’s The Owl And The Pussycat for sale in an RNLI station at Lizard Point, Cornwall, in the Summer of 2000.
Pea Green Boat featured live original music by Jane Watkins and Simon Munnery and John Dowie alternated in the roles of edward Lear and Ray Winstone, narrative elements now cut from the story.
Another version of the show, with the same team, ran at The Traverse theatre, Edinburgh in August 2002, and again at BAC that year. In June 2004, Radio 4 broadcast an edited version of the piece, produced by Liz webb, with Jane’s music removed to save money.
The version of Pea Green Boat you hold in your hand was recorded and produced by Jane, with her music reinstated, in the summer of 2005, with additional material. Thanks to Go faster Stripe for finally making it available. Stewart Lee, May 2007.
I have added an extra date to my Edinburgh Fringe run – on the 29th August. It is the same time as the rest of the run, 12.45pm at Stand 1. Tickets are currently still available here.
