Toma Gouband – Courant des Vents

Toma Gouband rolls flints, stones, and pebbles around on snare drums. Courant des Vents is a quiet, but startling, forty-five minute collaboration with the acoustics of St Peter’s church Whitstable, a room rapidly becoming the Sun Studios of European free improvisation.
Gouband never allows his Neolithic clacks to coalesce into tasteful Steve Reich style rhythmical minimalism, but works instead the patterns the resonant replies of the sacred space suggest, tracing air shapes with the clunk of stone on stone, finally dissolving into a protracted rumble, as ancestral ghosts hover at the firelit fringe of our first music.

"I think describing himself as a comedian is the only funny thing the man has ever said. Don't bother telling me that I don't get it; I don't want it. It's only possible to like right-on, lefty comedians like Stuart Lee if you're a right-on lefty yourself. In attempting to send up intolerance by being blatantly intolerant and bigoted, Lee falls flat on his face making any genuinely tolerant, left-of-centre, liberals so horrified that they simply could not laugh. In short, if you're a bigoted, socialist worker, civil servant, teacher, social worker or NHS employee then Stuart Lee is the comedian for you. If you actually care about tolerance for all, even those who have different political opinons from you, he's about as funny as the credit crunch."
