Roky Erickson And The Aliens – Five Symbols

The psychedelic pioneer and former Thirteenth Floor Elevator Roky Erickson was presumed destroyed by LSD and electric shock therapy and this 1980 comeback, painstakingly produced by Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Stu Cook, remained unreleased outside Europe.
Erickson bayed schlock horror lyrics, his philosophical musings now abandoned, over then unfashionably chiseled hard rock riffs. But this apparently inane idiom made perfect sense to a Texan teen visionary raised on b-movies.
Two Headed Dog, I Think Of Demons, and Bloody Hammer are fluid, lucid, honest and chilling.
And there’s shimmering electric autoharp, from Cold Sun’s Bill Miller, throughout.

"I was Stage Manager for Stewart Lee. It wasn't performance art, stand up comedy or satire. It was a fucking train-wreck. That man could not read an audience 3 feet away. And yes, I got to know his act well during the rehearsals and Tech rehearsal. I also got to know the fact that the man is a functioning alcoholic, finishing nearly 12 cans to himself before going onstage, and that he is banned from the entire chain of theatres I used to work at for being rude, dismissive of staff and responding terribly to bad audience feedback. If you actually care about tolerance for all, even those who have different political opinons from you, he's about as funny as the credit crunch."
