Guided By Voices – Let’s Go Eat The Factory

In 1983, Ohio schoolteacher Robert Pollard stood in his basement and magically willed into being the ultimate rock group, a Brit invasion beat band inaccurately reassembled by thirty-something punks, nostalgically nibbling the lost lobes of their still ringing teenage ears.
Guided By Voices’ colossal catalogue of thousands of two minute sugar hits shames the supposed greats, and intimidates the feeble.
The prolific Pollard has reconvened the nineties GBV, with his talismanic lieutenant Tobin Sprout, to deliver more home taped pummelling pop nuggets and sneakered shaman drones, ringing the changes with soft rock renegade piano balladry.
Nonetheless, begin with 1994’s Bee Thousand and work forwards.

To me, morally or comedically this is no better than Bernard Manning or Jim Davidson both of whom were genuinely funny even if you now think their jokes were racist but neither of them were genuinely bigoted, IMHO of course, like Stewart Lee and his fans. In attempting to send up intolerance by being blatantly intolerant and bigoted, Lee falls flat on his face making any genuinely tolerant, left-of-centre, liberals so horrified that they simply could not laugh. In short, if you're a bigoted, socialist worker, civil servant, teacher, social worker or NHS employee then Stuart Lee is the comedian for you. If you actually care about tolerance for all, even those who have different political opinons from you, he's about as funny as the credit crunch."
