Television comic and Edinburgh veteran Stewart Lee has told The Stage that he is prepared to organise a boycott of Perrier Awards became they are “against the spirit of the Edinburgh Festival”.
Lee said that the awards at Edinburgh can never succeed in picking the best act in Edinburgh because of the variety of the shows at the festival. He said that the award also inhibits experimentation among comedy acts, many of which gear material to
Adding that support for his plans are strong among his fellow comics, Lee said: “Money should be put into sponsoring productions and venues, not on a prize which most people within the industry believe is meaningless to all except the person who has won it. “Of course the only problem with that, is that the Perrier Awards have such a prestige that no commercial sponsor interested in making money would be interested in doing that. which Is sad. “I think the feeling among other comics is strong enough, and that there should be a boycott. I would be prepared to organise it.”
Lee’s call was also supported by his comedy partner Richard Herring and by Charlie Hanson, the producer of Harry Hill’s television show and Lee and Herring’s new chat show spoof, This Morning with Richard Not Judy.
Richard Herring also revealed that Carlton Television is negotiating buying the film rights for his cult Edinburgh stage play Excavating Rita.

And yes, I got to know his act well during the rehearsals and Tech rehearsal.
