Stewart Lee vs The Man-WulfLIVE – STEWART LEE VERSUS THE MAN-WULF – THE PLAYHOUSE
Oxford is the only place in Britain outside London that he can play for a week of sell-outs some going.
Spiritual home and all that. You know roughly what you’re going to get in a Stewart Lee gig – the audience is a big part; latecomers beware.
At this one we saw a poor chap that was waaaaay late being briefed by a steward that he’d get dog’s abuse (which he did obviously). At the last one he picked on a lass with a band tee he didn’t know who were “pop punk” – “Pop punk!? Pop punk!?” – “How can punk be pop…original punk was meant to replace pop so how can you have pop punk!?” Damn straight. The pop punk section in HMV hasn’t been the same since. Some recognition for his knowledge of Wayland Smithy which came up here – Lee is an authority on British ancient locations so this is his territory. He was mistaken for – spoiler alert – “that bloke from UB40” on a life long dream trip to one in Scotland…or was he. Current media villains getting it tight is also a theme – JK Rowling is an ever-present for her views on trans-gender, Trump, Musk, Michael Macintyre’s manager Addison Cresswell, Greg Wallace, Prince Andrew – all get it between the eyes tonight.
The second part of the show sees Stew aim bigger and bolder than ever before – ‘The 60 Million Dollar Netflix Comedian’, delivered in gung ho Nooooo Yooyk accent, aimed right at ‘hate comedians’ Ricky Gervais and in particular the abhorent Dave Chappelle, complete with werewolf costume and pyro but it feels slightly over played – “Suck my #@$&, lick my $#@$# and make me a goddamned sandwich”. Sometimes less is more Stew – the improv Scandinavian experimental radio show from previous nearly ended me by comparison. As did the jazz band which you had to imagine as it had its budget cut due to Brexit last time. But the ‘woke’ version tonight kills it “Suck my #$#$, lick my $#$$ and make me a goddam cinnamon oatmilk latte.”
You had to be there…
That quiff might have gone a bit misshapen and grey but he remains sharp as a tack and head and shoulders above anyone else out there. (SG)
