Laughing Point – a branch of charitable organisation CentrePoint – hosted a sell-out show in London’s Palace Theatre to raise funds and awareness for London’s youth homelessness crisis.
Hilariously deadpan Stewart Lee topped the evening’s line-up and any thoughts that he may be above toilet were soon flushed down the pan.
Lee spent his entire 25-minute set comparing a childhood memory of being tinkled on by school bullies to his successful comedy career.
Keeping the audience captivated, the 46-year-old managed to remain completely straight-faced as he turned his intense and acerbic wit to urine anecdotes.
Catherine Ryan, Josh Widdicombe, Joe Lycett, Aisling Bea and Tony Law also provided many laughs during their turns on the West End stage and the brilliant Daniel Kitson ensured everything ran ‘smoothly’ – squirm-inducingly awkward – with his fantastic audience-baiting banter as the event’s compere.
Canadian funny woman Ms Ryan provided a refreshingly scathing look at British popular culture.
Any strident royalists may have been left frothing at the mouth when she claimed Prince Harry was “the most successful ginger orphan since Annie”.
Lycett may be a relatively fresh face, but he identified himself as a force to be reckoned with on the comedy circuit with acid-tongued quips about dimwitted parking ticket jobsworths.
Oh and his spirit animal is a walrus with a sassy mouth, FYI.
Like Stewart Lee – though admittedly with a slightly sunnier disposition – Widdicome revisited his schoolboy days with some fresh but relatable observations.
Ahead of the gig the Channel 4 star said: “It is an honour to be doing a gig for a charity as brilliant and worthwhile as Centrepoint.
“It is a great bill and so I am a little annoyed I am performing as I would love to be in the audience.”
