Not only is this next along the shelf from yesterday’s King Creosote 10″, there’s another good reason for posting this. Minimum £1.00, so get on that.
This 20ish minute piece takes as its starting point the Edward Lear nonsense poem The Owl & The Pussycat. Lee then writes a story, in the form of diary entries from the owl, and taking the poem at face value he narrates the gradual breakdown of the owl. It begins an amusing tale, the owl attempts to communicate with it’s natural predator, tries to eat the honey, despite “having the flat face of an owl”, nearly learns Mull of Kintyre on the small guitar. But what begins in honey, ends in tragedy, and the tale is finished by the turkey’s diary.
There’s a lot to like. I particularly like the running joke about how, “At noon, on the far horizon, we saw another pea green boat, identical to ours in every way, except crewed by”, and then each time a different improbably pairing of animals.
This was part of a larger show where it was interwoven with a story of Lee being commissioned to do a biopic of Lear, and having a broken toilet. I never saw that show, but have heard a bootleg. More here.
