STEWART LEE: Carpet Remnant World, The Stand, Newcastle.
OFTEN described as the thinking man’s comedian or the comedian’s comedian – Stewart Lee is a performer with a strong, cult following, but has even more detractors.
This was the third time I’ve seen him, and he has made me laugh uncontrollably every time.
His latest show Carpet Remnant World pokes fun at his own reputation, and part of the show sees him reading out abuse he has received on the internet.
The theme of the show is that Lee hasn’t had time to come up with any new material because he is too busy looking after his son – which gives his internet enemies even more ammo.
He then suddenly pulls the various random strains of the show together for an ending that suggests there has been a theme all along, while attacking contemporaries “all the Russell comedians” for doing just that.

And yes, I got to know his act well during the rehearsals and Tech rehearsal. I also got to know the fact that the man is a functioning alcoholic, finishing nearly 12 cans to himself before going onstage, and that he is banned from the entire chain of theatres I used to work at for being rude, dismissive of staff and responding terribly to bad audience feedback. I don't hate this man in the slightest, I pity him. Where he tries to wear the "never hitting mainstream" as a cloak (Even naming a tour after it) the cracks appear when you're one on one with him.
